Bertelsmann's corporate culture is based on the belief that ownership, economic success and the nature of the media business bring with them a special responsibility to society. This belief can be reflected by Bertelsmann Stiftung, a nonprofit organization with its goal to encourage social change.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung was founded by Reinhard Mohn in 1977.Its nonprofit work is funded predominantly by income earned from its shares in Bertelsmann AG. Since its inception, the Bertelsmann Stiftung has spent roughly €605 million on nonprofit projects. The total budget for the 2005 fiscal year amounted to €56.7 million. Accordingly, entrepreneurial action and the recognition of social responsibility are integrally linked at Bertelsmann AG. To make a valuable contribution to society is one of the goals anchored in the company's core values, the"Bertelsmann Essentials".
